big pink brick road

Topotek 1, BIG Architects and Superflex have come together to create some rad urban space in Norrebro, as suburb of Copenhagen. All your favourite hits from architecture, urban design and art have developed this half mile of play park in one of the most diverse and socially challenged areas of Denmark.

Split in to three zones the area is a surreal kaleidoscope of found objects from countries and communities from all over the world. This collection has the intention of reflecting the neighbourhoods diversity and the aspirations of an urban and diverse Denmark. Some exercise frames from muscle beach LA, to sewage drains from Israel, palm trees from China and neon signs from Qatar and Russia, each accompanied by a small stainless plate inlaid in the ground describing the object, what it is and where it is from – in Danish and in the language of its origin.

The red zone is an extension of the recently completed community hall, acting as an extension and court yard for the organized on going activities with in the centre. The red square designates the modern, urban life with a cafĂ©, music support and sports areas.

The black zone is a designated transition space between the formal red zone and the free green zone. As the classic square, the black zone includes the globally ubiquitous benches and fountain. Globally recognisable and entirely assessable for all parts of the community.

The green zone is entirely green, even the lamp posts and cycle paths are painted green. This free rolling area of hills and troughs is adjacent to a local school and at the pinnacle the whole of the Superkilen Park can be observed over families picnicking or walking dogs.

I really enjoy reading about projects like this. It restores my faith in humanity for a bit as I try and forget that it'll get trashed  by the end of the year. Or is that just Glasgow...?
