George Square Deveoplment Dropped

If you have friend that is from Glasgow on your book of faces then you've probably seen some comments on the proposals for the redevelopment of George Square.

George Square Controversy

I think people where mostly opposed to plainly removing the history of the square and replacing it with flashy, non committal, nonsense for the up coming 2014 commonwealth games. I don't feel like that is too unreasonable, Glasgow is, after all, a tremendously historic city and what's the point in having water features that can only be used for 4 weeks a year?

Anyway, after popular back lash, it has been scrapped. While the official lines say that the public square will still receive a "substantial facelift" the swirling water features have been cut for now.

Lets see what they come up with next. I'm not saying that it wont be tough pleasing every one but maybe just putting some of the grass back and sprewsing up the benches would be more than enough. It's not like it's a desolate area, that needs 'regeneration' or any of that pish. The place is used all the freaking time for everything from traveling shows to media events to holiday markets not to mention every single day by all sorts of people eating lunch or just enjoying the city.

Put as simply as this it makes me more inclined to think that Glasgow City council just has to spunk some money somewhere which makes me sad considering all the social problems in the town that could probably be helped with a bit of community focused building or initiative, but wait, swirly paving! Weeee!
