Will they do it?

I've been really sour lately reading about all the scrambling mindless do gooders trying to 'save' dilapidated Gehry houses from demolition. Don't get me wrong it is beautiful, a design icon and it was one of his greatest works, built for his son, showcases his glass obsession, hell, it probably even has a cape he made for himself and a toilet used by the man himself, yes I freaking know. But can I just set the record straight here, there are HUNDREDS of architectural wonders out there, yes even some by famous architects, getting torn down all the time . If half the people know of half the buildings getting swept aside every day on sites across the country, the online petition websites would melt the internet.

I'm sorry but you can not hope to save all these buildings just because they are by a significant architect. Buildings need a purpose and should the building now no longer be fit for purpose then there's no point in keeping it standing no mater if Rem Koolhass himself jerked it into existence.

I am the first to ask if there is something that can be done with buildings. Personally I'd love to live in a modern classic building created by a great mind, but I am in the minority. Normal people want new shiney shit with a tv that pops out the end of the bed or whatever, yeah sign the petition but don't for a minuet think you'd actually consider a house with a fire place, tis far too draughty.

In an ideal world a property developer renovated these houses to a modern spec then sell them on, thus keeping excellent design while pleasing the masses but the sad fact is 8081 Meridian could probably build 10 shitters on the land this building is on. The guy sounds like a conservative republican by openly saying he doesn't give two tugs of a dead dogs dick about conservation and the like.

For all I know, this could be a run to push up the price of the house. Does that make sound like even more of a cynic than I seem already? So fuck.
